The following statement may be attributed to Pam Fichter, President of Missouri Right to Life:

Yesterday, the Missouri House truly agreed to and finally passed SCS HCS HB 1307 & 1313, by a vote of 111 to 40. This bill extends the current 24-hour reflection period after consultation to 72 hours before a woman has an abortion. This extra time will allow a woman to reflect on all her options before deciding to go forward with an abortion. This legislation will save babies and protect women from abortion clinics seeking to make a profit on an abortion.

Abortion is a life-changing procedure. It ends the life of an unborn baby, a decision that can never be undone. The procedure can also be harmful to the mother. In making this decision, women need time to review all the medical information and the alternatives available if she decides not to abort her child. This bill provides that. Among the options to be considered is seeking help from Pregnancy Resource Centers and Maternity Homes which serve women in crisis pregnancies by providing help to a woman during her pregnancy and for her and her child after birth.

Missouri Right to Life thanks all the legislators from both the House and Senate who voted for SCS HCS HB 1307 & 1313. We now call upon Governor Nixon to sign this important life-saving legislation.

Sponsors of HB 1307 & 1313 are Reps. Kevin Elmer and Keith Frederick. Sponsor of the senate version of the bill, SB 519 is Senator Sater.
