Proposed Federal Legislation Threatens Freedom of Speech: NRLC and MRL urge opposition to “Disclose Act” (H.R. 5175)
The House of Representatives plans to take up the so-called “Disclose Act” ( H.R. 5175) when it returns next week. This legislation was crafted in response to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. FEC (2010). While this legislation purports to require the disclosure of important information to the public, according to National Right to Life, it will:
“. . . discourage, as much as possible, disfavored groups (such as NRLC) from communicating about officeholders, by exposing citizens who support such efforts to harassment and intimidation, and by smothering organizations in layer on layer of record keeping and reporting requirements, all backed by the threat of civil and criminal sanctions.”
